Mt Airly and Gardens of Stone NP
This trip is primarily to drive Mt Airly in the Capertee Valley. This is one of the most scenic technical tracks in Australia, but it is very challenging. While it should be an amazing adventure with very some challenging 4wding and some great scenery, you will need be very experienced and well equipped.
The plan is to head up Saturday morning and stay at the Capertee Hotel. This will allow maximum track time and allow us to relax when we get back to the hotel. You will need to book you own accommodation. Saturday afternoon, we will drive the Spanish Steps in the Gardens of Stone National Park. On Sunday we will drive Mt Airly, noting that if it is closed due to bad weather, there are plenty of other options in the area. On Monday morning, we will do some exploring in the local area and then head back to Canberra after lunch.
You will need to be a very experienced driver, with a well equipped 4wd. Minimum vehicle requirements include a minimum 2 inch lift, at least one diff lock and a good winch. Unless you have dual lockers, you will definitely need to winch in at least one place. Sill protection is also required and vehicle damage is likely. Traction boards, snatch blocks and extension straps are also required.
You should watch this Youtube video before nominating – Mt Airly Youtube link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nnPWYAAvbuU
You will need to be physically able to walk the tracks and do track building as required. This is an amazing trip, but not for the faint hearted or ill prepared.
A reminder that you need to be self sufficient for food during the day, although there is a fairly well stocked Service Station near the Capertee Hotel.
Acceptance on this trip is at the sole discretion of the trip leader. You should reach out if you have any questions.
