Lazy South East Forests
Activity Description:
RESERVES BEING TAKEN. Although this trip is fully subscribed, put your name down for the wait list. This lazy camping trip incorporates easy driving, two easy bush walks, and beautiful forests. Meeting at 8:30am Saturday morning at Namadgi Visitor Centre, we will travel along Boboyan Road with a stop off at Brayshaws Hut (built 1903). Traveling through Cooma and along dirt roads to reach Nimmitabel, Brown Mountain peak, and an easy run into Nunnock Swamp. The walk around Nunnock Swamp is 3.6km with an option of an additional 1km which retraces some of the stock route used by stockmen of yesteryear as they transported cattle to the coast, and will hopefully include hearing the cacophony of frogs that inhabit this major wetland. We then drive Cattlemans Track and Postmans Track, with their numerous roll-overs, and traverse Devils Crossing (water), to arrive at Postmans Camp, our camp site (long drop toilet and fire pits). The Postmans Track and camp was the main route for the transport of mail from the Monaro in the 1800s. On Sunday we will return up Postmans and Cattlemans Tracks to Alexanders Hut (originally a cattlemans refuge which has been extended over the years to its present 3 roomed layout) and the Wilkinsons Walking Track (4.8kms) through significant native grasslands and snow gum woodland. After lunch we head home. No Camper trailers.
