The Southern Tablelands 4WD Club is not a Registered Training Organisation (RTO), however we are devoted to providing the best driver training possible to Club members. There are a range of courses held throughout the year to meet the Club’s membership and training requirements. The only mandatory (M) training is our Basic Driver Training course which is a prerequisite to enable members to participate in Grade 3 and above trips, and to participate in supplementary (S) driver training courses (available in second year of Club membership). Members who have not yet completed, or do not wish to complete, the Basic Driver Training course are welcome on all Grade 1 and Grade 2 trips, and social activities. Ancillary courses (A) are available to all Club members.
The safety of our instructors, students and vehicles is paramount, and vehicle and recovery equipment standards are aligned with this objective. A list of the minimum and recommended equipment can be found in the club’s Equipment Standards.
Other courses are run on demand and availability of skilled and experienced facilitators or by external organisations.
Basic Driver Training

Sand Driving and River Crossing
Mandatory course designed to equip Club members with the skills, techniques and knowledge to undertake Grade 3 and above Club trips.
This course is designed to equip members with the knowledge and skills to undertake Club Trips at Grade 4 and above. It introduces more complex driving techniques and driving in more difficult terrain
This training course is one evening of theoretical instruction and one day of practical instruction and is designed to equip members with the knowledge and skills to confidently undertake sand driving and water crossings.

Chainsaw Awareness
This course is designed to assist in understanding your winch and recovery gear, and how to use it safely. You will get the opportunity to use your winch using safe recovery techniques in a secure environment
This course will take your recovery skills to the next level. The course is designed for those who have completed the Basic Winching and Recovery Course and who are likely to find themselves in more difficult terrain or more complex recovery situations.
Chainsaws are a valuable tool when Four Wheel Driving, but are inherently dangerous. This course is intended to provide members with the confidence to use their chainsaw safely and maintain the saw to optimum performance.

Trip Leaders are a valuable club asset. The aim of this workshop is to assist members seeking to lead club trips to confidently coordinate and run four-wheel driving activities.
This workshop will cover basic configuration and setup requirements, Snail Trail logging (bread-crumbs), Route creation, Track log recording, Tracks recorded, Importing of Routes, Tracks, Data management and Exporting positions.
Workshops are run based on demand for a variety of tools and platforms (eg: ExploreOz, Hema, OziExplorer)
To sustain the Club’s Driver Training Program, there is a need to maintain a flow of members who are qualified to the Club’s Standards to instruct other members in the practices and techniques of four wheel driving. Members who have been approved as Driver Trainers will be part of the Driver Training Unit which has principal responsibility for provision of vehicle related courses.
