Basic Driver Training

Basic Driver Training is a ‘mandatory’ course designed to equip Club members with the skills, techniques and knowledge to undertake Grade 3 and above Club trips.  Completion of the Course will also provide trip leaders with confidence that trip nominees’ skills, vehicle, and recovery equipment setup meets the club’s minimum standards. 

The Basic Driver Training course consists of a theory evening in Canberra, and a Friday to Sunday additional theory and practical driving sessions.  The Course covers Basic Four Wheel Driving principles, convoy techniques, and basic recovery techniques.  As far as practicable course participants will have a club driving instructor in their vehicle to provide guidance and assistance.

  • Convoy Procedures,
  • Safe 4WDriving,
  • Tyres,
  • Driving Techniques,
  • Recovery Techniques

Practical Training

  • Vehicle preparation
  • Wheel placement
  • Stall out and hill starts
  • Practice in assessing and driving inclines, declines and obstacles
  • Use of snatch straps and traction boards

You must be a Full and Financial club member to undertake this course.

You must have completed a Vehicle and Recovery Equipment Assessment to ensure that your vehicle and recovery equipment meet the minimum standards required by the club.  The club’s minimum standards can be viewed here.
