Magpie Flat Campground is located along Blue Waterholes Trail in the high plains area of Kosciuszko National Park, around 500m above Blue Waterholes campground. I’ve booked 6 sites for Sat & Sunday nights. Nat Parks website says 5 sites = 20 people and that it’s a large, mostly flat & grassy site with a pit toilet & fireplaces. I haven’t done a recon of the campground itself but looking at the photos we should be able to squeeze 8 cars in easily. Nat Parks also said we can fit 2 cars per site. Route will be Brindabella Rd, Barnetts Rd, Broken Cart Trail, Long Plain Rd & Blue Waterholes Trail to Magpie Flat. Prolly stop at Dubbo Flat for smoko. I’d say mostly Grade 2, but probably better that drivers have completed club training, so I’ll say Grade 3. If decently wet, parts of Broken Cart can be a mess that’s best avoided, so we’ll play it by ear re the weather as the weekend gets closer. We could also be the first cars along after the winter closure, so i’ll bring my small-ish saw. Returning either the same way OR preferably via Long Plain Rd, Port Phillip Firetrail, Pocket Saddle Rd, Tantangara Rd & Snowy Mountains Hwy into Adaminaby for a coffee before the last stretch home via Bobeyan Road (or the Monaro if so inclined). Depending on the depth of the Tantangara crossing, the return route may not be passable. Advice from Nat Parks is that you can cross the Tantangara causeway when the dam level is less than %25. TBC closer to date, but at this point, Tantangara Dam is higher than last year @ %23ish, so we may not be able to cross – if so, back the same way we came in. There are a few more active options to fill Saturday arvo, Sunday or Monday AM for those so inclined: • Clarke Gorge walk – follows Cave Creek downstream through limestone gorges and cave formations. This 5km walk is medium difficulty, requiring several water crossings • Nichols Gorge walk – this 7km medium walk follows Cave Creek and passes some karst features and Cooleman Cave • Yarrangobilly Caves thermal pool – lovely spot fed by a warm (27deg) natural spring • Yarrangobilly Caves tours – cave tours, guided and self-guided • Coolamine Homestead – set among grassland and snow gums, the homestead showcases different building styles from the late 1800s • MTB might also be an option. Heading home after lunch on the Monday, including an arvo coffee/ beer stop in Adaminaby (if we can go that way). Departing at 9:30am sharp on Saturday 4 October from the Intersection of Uriarra Rd and Brindabella Rd. Camper trailers welcome in dry conditions. Suggest we all bring a bag of firewood.
