Description
Eoi for October long weekend at Magpie Flat, KNP.
Pending weather and road closure status, I’m planning to head in on Friday 3 October via Broken Cart/ Long Plan Rd (with Powerline an option from Brindy Rd to Broken Cart, depending on groups’ vehicle capacity/ towing).
Sat there are two walks I’m aiming to on do. In the morning, Clarke Gorge walk which follows Cave Creek downstream through narrow limestone gorges and cave formations to a nice waterfall. This 5km walk (total there and back) is easy enough but does require up to 9 water crossings – short-ish & shallow but cold.
In the arvo, I might also do the Nichols Gorge walk, around 7km loop along Cave Creek in the other direction, passes some karst features and Cooleman Cave which is worth a look into.
Blue waterholes is a pretty short walk from camp.
Sunday, thinking to head to Yarrangobilly Caves earily-ish for a cave tour or two, with the arvo spend at the thermal pool – lovely spot fed by a warm (ish – 27deg) natural spring
Heading home later AM Monday, via Long Plain Rd, Port Phillip Firetrail, Pocket Saddle Rd, Tantangara Rd & Snowy Mountains Hwy into Adaminaby for a coffee before the last stretch home via Bobeyan Road (or the Monaro if so inclined).
Provided its dry, camper trailers are fine, with smaller off-road vans mostly ok (and easier if you/ we skip the powerline track section if towing a bit heavier/ bigger).
I put 6 cars, but can probably fit maybe 8 if I book all the sites at Magpie Flat (which i’ll do anyway)
